Inpatient Rehabilitation Services

Short-term rehabilitation therapy is available for those hospitalized patients who may need physical, occupational and speech therapy services following treatment for an acute illness or injury.

In this situation, rehabilitation care helps patients prepare for returning home following hospitalization or for ongoing therapy in our inpatient unit. Available seven days a week, services can be scheduled within 24 hours following a physician referral.

The 10-bed Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Stanly Regional serves patients recovering from stroke, trauma, neurological disorders, amputations, orthopedic conditions and more. Those admitted to the inpatient program must meet the following criteria:

  • Be medically stable.
  • Have functional deficits requiring multidisciplinary treatment.
  • Be able to tolerate three hours of therapy per day.
  • Have potential for improvement.
  • Require 24-hour skilled rehabilitation nursing care.
  • Be able to participate in a learning environment.

A dedicated group of specialists, representing many different areas of rehabilitation, works together as a team under the supervision of a physiatrist to develop individualized treatment plans to help each patient achieve maximum function. A medical doctor with special expertise in physical medicine and rehabilitation, the physiatrist also works closely with each patient's primary care physician during hospitalization and after discharge.

Other team members include physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapist assistants, speech and language pathologists, medical social workers, dietitians and rehabilitation nurses. Upon admission to the inpatient unit, each patient's needs and goals are thoroughly evaluated and discussed with the patient and family members.

Because rehabilitation is often physically and emotionally demanding as well as long-term, family participation is strongly encouraged. Rehabilitation services are also available to patients in the acute care section of the medical center.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Services

Similar to inpatient rehabilitation care, outpatient rehabilitation services are also customized to meet the specific needs of the patient. Many outpatient services are performed in the medical center's modern and fully equipped gym. Our staff utilizes the latest therapies for treating orthopedic and sports injuries, hand and back injuries, neurological disorders and problems associated with arthritis, as well as other conditions.

  • Work conditioning—this program involves a supervised regimen designed to return injured workers to the work force and to prepare employees for new tasks.
  • Functional capacity evaluation—this evaluation is used to determine job function capability.
  • Injury prevention, back and cumulative trauma management seminars —these educational seminars are provided on-site by request.
