In North Carolina one in four teens, one in five school children and one in eight preschool children are overweight. Stanly County has chosen to address this issue head-on and has created a program that supports a healthy environment for local children—Healthy FUNdamentals.
Initiated by a group of concerned community leaders, Healthy FUNdamentals focuses on preschoolers and is designed to put fun into children’s health and wellness. The program’s primary goal is to motivate children, their families and their caregivers to achieve healthy lifestyle practices that will last a lifetime.
Healthy FUNdamentals has already developed a pilot program that is being implemented in three local daycare facilities. This program will assist staff, children and parents in addressing physical activity and nutrition issues. Through an assessment tool, three target areas will be selected and an action plan devised and implemented to address issues specific to each daycare setting. The program will also work with local health care providers to ensure that current science-based protocols are incorporated.
Healthy FUNdamentals is funded by Stanly County Smart Start Partnership for Children and is operated by Stanly Regional Medical Center. For more information or to schedule an informational presentation about Healthy FUNdamentals, call (704) 983-7820 or email at mandi.oresick@stanly.org.
