Our story really began over 60 years ago in response to the growing health care needs of Stanly County citizens.
At the time, Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated to an unprecedented fourth term as President, and America was in the waning days of World War II.
The year was 1945. And we’ve been making history of our own ever since.
In a letter to the editor in The Stanly News & Press on March 27, an Albemarle resident first proposed the idea of building a single hospital to replace the outdated Yadkin Hospital and Stanly General Hospital.
Financed by a combination of state and federal funds, individual and industrial contributions, foundation gifts and other assets, the new facility was named Stanly County Hospital.
A 35-member board of trustees representing all sections of the county, as well as various civic and veterans organizations, was selected to oversee the day-to-day operations.
Stanly County Hospital admitted its first patient on July 12. Dr. W.N. McKenzie served as the first chief of staff and Joe S. Lennon as the first administrator.
The need for a more up-to-date facility became evident. During that year, a conference resulted in a plan to construct a 130-bed replacement facility.
It would be named Stanly Memorial Hospital in honor of those members of the armed services who had given their lives for their country.
The board of trustees and the medical staff accepted the plan for a replacement facility and construction began on March 28.
Patients began occupying the new Stanly Memorial Hospital on April 25, and the hospital was dedicated on May 24.
The old Stanly County Hospital building was imploded to make room for physician offices, which now comprise Stanly Medical Plaza. Only two sections of the old hospital were spared and are now housing physician practices.
Stanly Memorial opened a behavioral health unit on the third floor.
Due to substantial increases in outpatient surgery, an outpatient center was added to the west end of the hospital in August.
An addition was made to the radiology department.
To better serve area business and industry, Occupational Health Services was added to the service mix.
The Rehabilitation Center of Stanly Memorial Hospital, a 10-bed physical rehabilitation unit, opened on the third floor, and a second addition was made to the radiology department.
Stanly Memorial Hospital, now a 119-bed facility, launched a four-phase expansion and renovation project in April to address space needs caused by increasing volumes in outpatient services.
During Phase I in the planned expansion, the Emergency Department was renovated and expanded. In Phase II, a wing was added to the west end of the campus to house Outpatient Rehabilitation Services, Occupational Health, Information Systems and Human Resources.
An addition was created to accommodate Administrative/Fiscal/Support Services during Phase III.
The Family & Education Center opened in Phase IV of the expansion. This beautiful addition housed the new Women’s Services area, Special Events Center, the Health Library and parking deck.
At the same time, the Roy M. Hinson Cancer Center was also opened.
The opening of the Sleep Medicine Center at Stanly Memorial expanded the outpatient services of the hospital.
Stanly Memorial Hospital became tobacco-free. Stanly Memorial also announced plans to develop the Western Stanly Outpatient Center in Locust.
Accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) in October 2005.
Stanly Memorial Hospital changed its name to Stanly Regional Medical Center.
Stanly Regional Medical Center formed a strategic alliance with Carolinas Healthcare System and construction began on phase one of Stanly Regional West in Locust.
Stanly Regional Medical Center designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.
Stanly Regional West campus opened in the summer. Center for Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine will open in the fall.
Stanly Regional Medical Center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from the Joint Commission and is now designated as a certified Primary Stroke Center.
In 2009, Stanly Regional Medical Center and Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS) expanded their 15-year relationship to strengthen health care in Stanly and Montgomery counties by entering into a management services agreement. These management services will enable Stanly Regional to strengthen its focus on quality patient care and have available the resources of one of the largest and most respected health care organizations in the United States.
